He is the son of former first-class cricketer Upendra Gunathilake and brother of all-rounder Dasun Shanaka. He attended Royal College, Colombo and played for the college cricket team. When he was 17, he captained the Under-19 team at the 2008 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Malaysia.

In August 2009, he made his List A debut for Burgher Recreation Club in the 2009–10 Saravanamuttu Trophy tournament.
